What Gas Fitting Work Covers

Queensland's definition of gas work is broad: it takes in every job that installs, removes, alters, repairs, services, tests or certifies a gas system, with all pipework and connections included. That wording covers most things a homeowner would call "the gas side" of a place.

In practice it means:

  • running new gas lines and moving old ones
  • connecting and disconnecting appliances
  • servicing and testing cookers, heaters and similar gas equipment
  • signing off a finished installation or alteration.

Queensland homes burn two fuel gases: natural gas arriving by pipe, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which comes bottled or in a bulk tank. The same licence rules and the same safety guidance cover both, so the gasfitter who turns up handles either system.

Servicing earns its own line here. Gas appliances deserve a licensed gasfitter's periodic check, and they should be set up and used the way the manufacturer's instructions spell out. A neglected burner is a hazard, not just an inefficiency.

Who May Do Gas Work in Queensland

Queensland law reserves gas work for licensed gasfitters, and it leaves no side door. Before anyone touches a gas line at your place, ask the person to show you the gas work licence, and hold off until you have seen it.

Plumbing and drainage work runs on a different ticket. The QBCC issues an occupational licence for the tradesperson on the tools. Whoever runs the jobs as a business needs a contractor licence as well.

The QBCC's registers also work in your favour. Before you book, you can check a licence online and see whether a Form 4 has been recorded against your address.

Who Receives the Gas Certificate

The gas system compliance certificate signs off a finished gas installation or alteration as compliant, and the owner gets the original immediately on completion. If a distribution network supplies your fuel gas, that network's operator is sent a copy too, within 5 days.

Note the trigger, though: the certificate belongs to installs and alterations, not to every gas job. A repair or a routine service does not generate one, so for a cooktop service or a leak fix, the paperwork that matters is the invoice and the fixed quote.

Keep the certificate with your house records anyway. A later sale, a renovation or an insurance question all run smoother when the gas sign-off is in the folder, and our gas compliance certificates page explains the full paper trail.

Gas Work Costs for Pipework and Appliances

Four things set the price of a gas job: the type of job, how easily we reach the pipework, how many gas points the property has, and whether a supply check applies. We settle it with a fixed quote before any work starts, so you know the figure up front.

Each driver works on the bill differently:

  1. The type of job

A new line to an outdoor BBQ bay is a different day from mending an existing run inside a wall.

  2. Access

Pipe buried under a path takes longer to reach than pipe in an open cupboard.

  3. The number of gas points

Every extra point adds pipe, joints and testing.

  4. A supply check

Before anything new goes on, the gasfitter confirms the gas cylinders can keep up, that the meter has the capacity, and that the pipe sizes suit the extra load.

Coastal work adds a wrinkle. Sea air off Moreton Bay is hard on outdoor fittings and pipework. A foreshore-side job near Marine Parade can therefore need more replacement parts than the same job a few streets back, and the quote reflects what we actually find.

Gas Jobs With Their Own Pages

Three gas jobs come up so often on this run that each has earned its own page. Whatever the job, a licensed gasfitter takes every one of them.

  • Suspect a leak at the meter or a connector? Our gas leak repairs page covers what to do, and what not to touch, before we arrive.
  • Upgrading the stove? The gas cooktop installation page walks through the supply check and the connection day.
  • Selling or renting the place? Start at gas compliance certificates for the paperwork a finished gas job leaves behind.

From a cooktop changeover in a unit near Comino's Arcade to a new bay at a Portwood Street cottage, the visit runs the same way each time.

Gas Questions From Redcliffe Homes

What jobs does a gas fitter do around the house?

A licensed gasfitter runs new lines, connects and disconnects appliances, services and tests gas equipment, and certifies finished work, with every pipe and connection in scope. Installs and alterations come with a compliance certificate. Cookers, barbecues and hot water units also need periodic servicing.

Is a plumber the same as a gas fitter?

No, the two trades are separate. Only a licensed gasfitter may carry out gas work, so ask which licence the person at your door holds before they start. Plenty of plumbers carry both, and the QBCC's registers sit online if you want to double-check.

Who gets the gas compliance certificate?

The owner receives the original certificate immediately on completion of a gas installation or alteration. If a distribution network supplies your gas, the operator is sent a copy too, within 5 days. Repairs and routine services do not trigger one.

What will a gas fitter cost me in Redcliffe?

The price depends on the type of job, access to the pipework, how many gas points the property has, and whether a supply check applies. We set the figure with a fixed quote before any work starts, so nothing lands on the invoice unannounced.

Does a new gas appliance need a supply check first?

Yes, a supply check comes first. The gasfitter checks the LPG cylinders can keep up with the extra demand, that the gas meter has the capacity, and that the pipe sizes suit the load. Only then does the install go ahead.

Are your gas fitters licensed for gas work in Redcliffe?

Yes, our gasfitters are licensed. QBCC No: 15024607 covers our licensed plumbing and gasfitting, every job is done by a licensed plumber, and we're licensed and insured. Feel free to ask for the gas work licence on the day, before any work starts.
