Pipes, Water Supply and Ground Conditions

Home plumbing is the full system between the meters and your fixtures: the water supply, the gas lines and every tap and appliance they feed. Redcliffe's housing stock gives that system two very different starting points.

At the last census, 51.4 per cent of local dwellings were separate houses. A further 37.6 per cent were flats or apartments. A post-war cottage in Silvyn Street and a 2000s unit near Marine Parade therefore sit at opposite ends of the pipe-age range.

Mains water only reached the peninsula in December 1941. Cottages plumbed soon afterwards were usually piped in galvanised iron, and untouched runs of that pipe rust from within, choking showers and tinting basins. Where the rust wins, we handle the repiping.

The newer stock has its own pattern. Area-level figures put building approvals at 147 dwellings in 2021-22, and 442 across five years. That wave of young apartments is starting to show its first breakdowns, and a split flexi hose on an upper floor can drip through into the unit below.

Salt air attacks brass fittings, outdoor taps and meter gear harder along the foreshore than a few streets inland. Brasswork near Marine Parade or Redcliffe Parade turns green and seizes well before the same fittings do further back.

Telling an Emergency From a Routine Job

A burst pipe, a gas smell, flooding and a total loss of water or gas supply are the faults that cannot sit tight until a scheduled appointment.

Queensland tenancy law treats rentals the same way: a gas leak, a burst water service, a serious leak, flooding and a toilet that is blocked or broken all count as emergency repairs. Owners can use that list as a yardstick.

Everything else fits a booked time. A dripping mixer, a slow kitchen drain or a cold shower on a mild June day can all hold over for a slot that suits you.

For the faults that need a plumber today, the emergency plumber page sets out what to shut off and in what order. The short version follows.

Before you pick up the phone:

  • A burst pipe or water pouring out: close the main valve at your water meter, then call (07) 3524 7163.
  • A smell of gas: turn the appliance off if it's safe to, open the doors and windows, and don't switch any electrics on or off. If the smell stays, shut the gas off at the meter or cylinder and call (07) 3524 7163. If you can still smell it after that, call 000.
  • A dripping tap or a toilet that keeps running: it can usually wait for a booked visit. Call (07) 3524 7163 and choose a time.

We're available 24/7, 7 days a week, with no extra charge for nights, weekends or public holidays.

From Dripping Taps to New Gas Connections

Queensland plumbing law splits jobs into two camps. Fixing a broken pipe or swapping a worn fitting is minor work, with no permit and no Form 4.

Installing a new fixture, or moving an existing one, counts instead as notifiable work. No council permit is needed, but the job ends with a Form 4 lodged with the QBCC.

A leaking joint under the laundry tub sits in the first camp, and so does renewing a rusted garden tap on a Sheehan Street cottage. A licensed plumber carries out either job, nothing more.

Putting a new toilet, shower or sink in, or shifting one across the room during a reno, sits in the second camp. The Form 4 goes to the QBCC within 10 business days of finishing, and you get a copy for your records.

Permit work, like the plumbing for a brand-new house, is a third camp of its own. The plumber lodges the council application before any tools come out.

A few jobs are unregulated and open to anyone competent: swapping a tap washer or jumper valve, changing a shower head, renewing a water filter cartridge, and replacing cistern washers or the suction cup rubber. Fitting a whole new tap or toilet stays licensed work.

The pages that match these camps:

One more thing worth knowing: if a job turns out defective, or a Form 4 never shows up, the QBCC accepts complaints through an online plumbing and drainage form.

What Goes Into a Plumbing Quote

Four things set a plumbing bill: what is broken, which parts it needs, how reachable the fixture is, and the time spent on site. A cistern in an open laundry is a different job from the same cistern wedged behind a 1960s vanity.

Access matters more than most people expect. On Redcliffe's narrow blocks, older drains run tight against fences, and a pipe that lets go under a driveway needs excavation a wall cavity does not. Salt-seized fittings on the foreshore side fight back coming apart, which adds time too.

A written quote lists the scope, the parts and the labour, which lets you compare two quotes line for line. Insist on the numbers in writing before anyone opens a toolbox.

The Work We Do Across the Peninsula

Our run covers the whole property, grouped the way we would quote it:

  1. Taps and toilets

repairs, replacements and new installations, from a dripping mixer to a full toilet installation.

  2. Water pipes

leak detection, burst pipe repairs, flexi hoses and repiping of old galvanised services.

  3. Bathrooms

shower repairs, leaking showers and renovation plumbing.

Two areas get their own pages because they need the room: hot water systems and blocked drains.

We also do work that does not wait for a fault. A plumbing health check suits an older cottage before the wet season, and our page on older Redcliffe homes covers what pre-1940 and post-war construction means for your pipes. Units and townhouses have their own quirks, and our unit plumbing page deals with them, including the shared-line questions that come with strata.

Where We Work

Redcliffe sits at the centre of our regular run, and we cover the peninsula around it.

The suburbs we cover list has the full set. Kippa-Ring and Scarborough are the closest neighbours on the run, with Margate and Newport also in easy reach.

Questions Redcliffe Locals Ask

Call (07) 3524 7163

Do plumbers in Redcliffe charge a call-out fee?

No, we don't. Call-outs cost $0 on every job, and you only pay for work you've agreed to in writing before anyone starts.

Is there an extra charge for plumbers at night or on weekends?

No, there isn't. Nights, weekends and public holidays cost no extra, and we're available 24/7, 7 days a week.

What does the age of a Redcliffe home mean for its pipes?

Redcliffe's oldest stock shows it. Cottages plumbed after the water opened in 1941 often still run galvanised iron lines that rust inside and choke flow. Lead-based solder also went into copper and brass joins until 1989, so pre-1990 pipework deserves a look.

What plumbing services does a home plumber provide?

The work splits by part of the property: taps and toilets, water pipes, gas fitting, bathrooms, and kitchens and laundries. Systems for heating water and blocked drains each get their own page on this site.

Who is allowed to do gas work in a Queensland home?

Gas work in Queensland belongs to a licensed gasfitter alone. The law covers installing, repairing, servicing, testing and certifying gas systems and their pipework, so ask to see that licence before anyone touches a spanner.

Do I need a council permit for plumbing work at home?

No, in most cases. Repairs, notifiable jobs and unregulated jobs need no permit. Permit work, such as plumbing for a brand-new house, does need one, and the plumber lodges the council application before starting.
