Choosing a Replacement Toilet Suite

Three suite types cover nearly every Australian bathroom, and each builds the cistern and pan differently:

  1. Close-coupled

the cistern bolts straight down onto the pan behind the seat, so the two read as one unit.

  2. Back-to-wall

the pan stands flush against the wall, with the pipework hidden behind it.

  3. Wall-hung

the bowl hangs from a steel frame set inside the wall, a flush plate on the surface and a cistern tucked away behind it.

A cistern can also go in on its own when the new unit lines up with the old pan's bolt holes and water connections. Where it doesn't, the whole suite comes out.

Everyday faults sit on our tap and toilet plumbing page, and a worn valve inside a sound suite usually makes toilet repairs the quicker job.

Will a New Toilet Fit the Old Pipes

Set-out means the measured spot where the pan's waste outlet sits, in the floor or the wall. A new pan drops onto the existing waste when its own outlet matches that spot.

The two outlet types are simple. An S-trap pan pushes waste down through the floor, and a P-trap pan sends it out through the wall behind. Outlets differ between models, so the drain already under the pan usually picks the type.

When a chosen pan misses the old drain, the plumber either alters the waste pipe or a different pan that suits the drain goes in instead.

Comfort Height and Old Cisterns on the Peninsula

At the last census the median age here sat at 52, so plenty of households near Sheehan Street and across the peninsula ask about comfort-height pans: a taller bowl that is easier on the knees.

Unrenovated bathrooms from the 1940s to the 1960s building boom still hold single-flush cisterns, so a dual flush upgrade cuts the water on every visit. Owners and investors both call on Redcliffe Same Day Plumbing for the swap.

A dripping tap on the new basin is a different job again: our tap repairs page covers washers, mixers and seized spindles.

Toilet Installation and the Form 4

A licensed plumber handles the paperwork as well as the fitting, and the category turns on what changes.

A brand-new toilet, or an existing one shifted to a new position, is notifiable work: no permit from council, and a Form 4 lodged with the QBCC inside 10 business days of finishing. A straight swap of an existing toilet is minor work, so a QBCC licensee does it and no Form 4 lodgement happens at all.

Changing the waste pipe under the pan counts as notifiable plumbing work too. The QBCC checks lodgements, and skipping the form is an offence.

On notifiable jobs, the licensee lodges and pays for the Form 4, then may pass that fee plus admin costs on to you. Owners unsure which category a job falls into can run the QBCC's online questionnaire.

What the Water Rules Mean for a New Toilet

A dual flush toilet keeps two volumes in the cistern: a light half flush and a heavier full flush. Every toilet fitted in Australia carries WaterMark certification, plus a listing on the national Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) register.

New dwellings lift the bar further: a new house, townhouse or sole-occupancy unit needs a dual flush toilet rated 4 stars or better under that scheme. Business Queensland notes that renovations sit outside the rule.

Rentals have their own test when a landlord passes water costs to the tenant. The full flush is held to 6.5 litres or less, the half flush to 3.5 litres or less, and the average to 4 litres, taken across one full and four half flushes.

Like for Like or a New Toilet Position

The quote turns on the suite in the box and the plumbing in the floor, checked on site before anything is agreed:

  1. Suite type

a close-coupled swap is the quickest day; a wall-hung rebuild opens the wall.

  2. Set-out match

dropping the new outlet straight onto the old waste keeps the day short; altering the drain adds work.

  3. Position

a pan that stays on its old spot reuses the connections, while a move means new supply and waste runs.

  4. Access

tight units and recessed bathrooms slow the reach to supply and waste.

  5. Form 4 fee

on notifiable jobs the lodgement cost can land on your invoice.

Whatever the combination, your fixed quote lands before any tool comes out.

Toilet Installation Questions We Get

Call (07) 3524 7163

Can I install a toilet myself in Redcliffe?

No, not the suite itself. Installing a toilet is licensed work in Queensland. The QBCC leaves only three cistern parts unregulated: the washer in the drop valve, the float valve washer and the suction cup rubber, and that work still has to meet the standards.

Does replacing a toilet need a council permit in Redcliffe?

No, a straight replacement is minor work done by a QBCC licensee. A new or relocated toilet is notifiable work, needing no permit, just a Form 4 to the QBCC, and altering the waste pipe is notifiable too. Where the property drains through a combined drain or runs two water supplies, adding a fixture does need a council permit.

What WELS rating should a new toilet have?

At minimum, 4 stars on a dual flush toilet for a new house, townhouse or sole-occupancy unit. Business Queensland notes renovations sit outside that rule. Every toilet fitted also carries WaterMark certification plus a listing on the WELS register.

Does my landlord have to replace the old rental toilet?

No, the flush limits are a test for passing water costs to a tenant, not a replacement order. When a rental fails it, the owner or manager pays a sensible share of the bill, and the tenant only pays extra where the property is individually metered and the lease allows it.

What is the difference between an S-trap and a P-trap toilet?

An S-trap pan pushes waste through the floor, and a P-trap pan sends it out through the wall behind. Whichever outlet your bathroom already has decides which pan fits the existing waste.
